While experts agree that some stress is actually good for you, tip the balance too far and it can start to affect you negatively. As well as the obvious signs of you feeling 'stressed out' and generally unable to cope, high stress levels can have a knock on affect that cause real physical health problems. Whilst pills, prescribed under guidance by a GP, are understandably the solution (especially as an 'easy answer') for many, here are a three 'natural' stress relief techniques to consider s a starting point.
Diet - eating and drinking sensibly is a good way to begin, and will also provide long-term benefits. The way I look at it is this - you always make sure you fill your car with the correct type of fuel to make it run smoothly - why wouldn't you do the same with your very own body?
Some people turn to food or alcohol as a way to cope with stress, but this usually turns out to be a short-term buzz, which can actually depress them when they realize the bad effects this has on their bodies.
Exercise - regular exercise is a great way to de-stress yourself. Many people suffering from stress can find it really hard to get going in the morning - or even get out of bed, if they have no reason or motivation for doing so. But giving yourself a simple goal of getting up early each day and performing a regular exercise or yoga regime will set you up for the day, and be of great benefit to your mind, as well as your body.
These days, products such as Wii Fit make it simple to set up your own program at home, set yourself achievable goals, and actually make exercise fun, even for those who may not previously considered taking this up.
Procrastination - many stressed people are so wrapped up worrying about things which they have absolutely no influence over, that they put off things they could, or should do. Friends who don't understand how you are feeling, may ask you to 'snap out of it' or 'pull yourself together' not realizing that, to the stressed or depressed person, this is not such a simple matter.
A technique that helps is to tackle a major task in your life. Now, you don't need to resolve the whole task in one go - just make a start on a job you've been putting off for a while. Resolve to spend an hour or so each day, until the job is complete. This way you are beginning to achieve something, without having to commit your whole day to something you are not looking forward to. Once the job is completed, you will start to feel good about yourself again.
