In this day and age, many of us are looking for effective ways to relieve stress. If stress is affecting your life, it governs the way you think, act, as well as how healthy you feel, generally. Understandably, this can lead to people looking for a seemingly quick and easy way to deal with stress related symptoms, such as anxiety or even depression. Inevitably, this means tablets or other medication, in most cases. However, there are common sense and simple steps that can be taken, which are often overlooked when you are caught up in the somewhat panicky environment of stressful episodes.

One stress relief technique is to calmly sit down and make a list of all the current issues in your life that are causing you stress. Initially, just write down everything - no matter how trivial some may seem. The list can be split into two later - 'serious' issues and 'not so serious'. This simple act of writing problems down can help you see things in a different light. Even if you don't have an immediate solution at hand, having the issues laid out in front of you can help to feel that you are doing something about them, and taking the first step to taking control.

If stress affects how well you sleep, having problems written down helps to clear your mind. Whilst all your worries may not have magically disappeared, you have at least 'transferred' them to a place where you can confront them when the time is right. This knowledge that you are not burying your head in the sand and have begun to take some action can really help. Often, ignoring problems or taking no action is the major contributor of your stress anyway.

Then take a look at those issues which are 'not so serious'. You may find that a multitude of small issues are causing more stress than one or two 'big issues'. Usually, these issues will have quicker or more practical solutions which are controllable. Eliminating these first will help clear your mind of annoying distractions and leave you in a position to begin dealing with more serious issues.

Many people get stressed over things which they have absolutely no control over. However, if you consider this logically, what is the point of getting stressed or worried about something you can't influence?

For example, I had a friend who had a very domineering father who would put him down at each and every opportunity. This person had been like this all his life, and it caused untold stress to my friend. However, he eventually realised that he could never change his father's behaviour. Instead, he chose to change the only thing he could influence - and that was simply his own reaction to his father's behaviour. He chose to take control of his own feelings and determined that whatever his father said or however he treated him, he would retain a positive attitude, and exert his own right to choose to not let the opinions upset or affect him.

In the same way, anyone can also choose to take control over the things in their life that are worrying them. They can take actions in areas they can control. The important word here is ACTION. So, if someone has financial concerns, for example, although they may not have the money at hand to immediately sort their problems out, they could take control of areas they can influence, such as taking action by arranging a meeting with a Citizens Advice representative. From such beginnings, they may be able to subsequently arrange a workable repayment plan to appease debtors.
